iLifezone 55 - “Contacts In Address Book”
This is a screen cast featuring Liana Lehua. In this episode, Liana gives some helpful tips how to manage your contacts in Address Book. Please note that this tutorial involves an example using Tiger on a newer MacBookPro. Your experience may vary if you use a different configuration. Also, we recognize that there are always potentially additional or different ways to achieve the same task on a Mac. Accordingly, we make no claim that this is the best way or the only way to accomplish something - just an acceptable way. Enjoy.

Here’s a great tip for finding out who’s in what group - highlight a name and select the Option key

Stacy/Liana,
Thanks for the screencast.
I have a question:
I noticed in the screencast some entries show a dedicated icon in front of the name. The same icon shows up on the tab at the right of the Address Book window.
How do you create and manage this kind of icons?

Thanks, Trev. That’s a great tip.
Fred. There are several icons that appear based on a number of factors. I’ll cover the ones I have in my address book.
The “address card” icon is the standard icon for a contact saved as an individual.
The “building” icon appears when I save a contact as a company by checking the “Company” box under “First” and “Last” name input fields.
Finally, I have a round blue and white icon that indicates who, of my contacts, I am syncing with via Plaxo (a third-party software).
I hope this helps.

I noticed on the screencast where address groups are being created that Liana’s dock appeared from the menu bar. What tweak or program are you using for this effect?
March 3rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm
Aloha Mark. I use a free program called Onyx by Titanium Software. There are a lot of tweaks you can make, including placing your dock at the top of your screen. Leopard, Tiger and Panther versions are available. Be careful which changes you make.
Changing the dock location has proven non-destructive and safe during my use (about a year now). Enjoy.

Ok Liana. I use Onyx and I don’t see an option to place the dock at the TOP of my screen. I’m running Leopard with the current Onyx installed. What am I missing?

Aloha Mark,
You’ll find it in Preferences - Parameters - Dock - Position. I am just upgrading from Tiger and installing Leopard today, so I’ll double check when my install is complete.

Thanks Liana.
The one i meant was the Plaxo-synch icon

For those of you who have had questions, re: my dock position and my custom icons and sounds, here is the info you’ve been asking for. Enjoy.
DOCK POSITION
Onyx allows me to change the location of my Dock. In Tiger, 10.4.x, there is an option to place the toolbar at the top of your display. This option DOES NOT exist in any version of Leopard 10.5.x. http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
DESKTOP ICONS AND SOUNDS
The Star Wars icons on my desktop and the sound of Chewbacca when I eject one of my drives are from a Star Wars Series “Chewbacca” USB drive I purchased from Mimoco http://www.mimoco.com/mimobots/#SW. Mimoco includes relevant the images, sounds and other extras with each USB drive they sell.
